You can book privately without a referral. With an appropriate GP Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral, eligible patients can receive the Medicare rebate shown above for an in-person consultation of 50 minutes or longer with a Clinical Psychologist (MBS Item 80010).

Medicare-funded individual psychological treatment is available for up to 10 eligible sessions per calendar year, subject to the relevant referral and review requirements.

Private health insurance

Psychology rebates are available through many private health insurers where Psychology or Mental Health services are included in eligible Extras cover. Major funds offering psychology benefits on eligible policies include:

  • Medibank / ahm
  • Bupa
  • HCF
  • nib
  • Australian Unity
  • Other participating private health funds

The amount you can claim varies according to your insurer, level of cover, annual limits, provider requirements and any applicable waiting periods. Medicare and private health insurance cannot both be claimed for the same consultation.

Other funding options

Other funding arrangements may be available in appropriate circumstances, subject to eligibility, provider requirements and any necessary prior approval:

  • Workers compensation insurers
  • Compulsory third-party (CTP) insurance
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA)
  • NDIS-funded disability-related psychology supports that build or maintain functional capacity, where eligible and included in your plan
  • Employee Assistance Programs (EAP)
  • Other third-party funding arrangements

If an organisation will fund your appointments, contact the practice before booking. The practice will confirm whether prior approval is required, what is covered and where invoices should be sent.

Any possible gap or responsibility for payment should be agreed before the first funded appointment.

Please check directly with your insurer or funding provider regarding your eligibility, level of cover, available rebate and remaining annual limits before commencing treatment.
